Making Friends and Being a Good Friend

Books about friendship and making friends are one of our favorite book subjects here in the Children’s Department.  They’re always relatable and teach you how to both be a friend and make new friends, a useful skill for kids.  Here’s just a few we have. As always, stop by and ask us if you’d like more options.

Jim is worried he won’t make a friend on his first day of school. Turns out, he’s worried for no reason because a boy named Paul might be just the new friend for him!

A cat decides to be a good friend to the fish Bubble by freeing him from his fish bowl!

A story about how an apple named Mac and a worm named Will become friends.

Grace loves her dog Fred so much that she doesn’t want to share him with anyone, but then she realizes that being a good friend means sharing your friend with others, too!

A book about how having good manners is an important part of making and staying a good friend.

Books about Teachers

Teachers are great people and deserve to have books written about them, don’t you think? Here’s just a sampling of some books we have about teachers:

Miss Malarkey has been acting strange lately, laughing more than normal and talking to Principal Wiggins a lot. Her students grow worried, what secret is Miss Malarkey hiding?

Spot the dog loves going to school, especially because of his wonderful teacher Miss Bear, who is, as you probably guessed, a bear!

A rhyming story about all the awesome places a teacher would take her students if she could, from the Everglades to the Great Wall of China.

Heartwarming story about an art teacher named Miss Chew who encouraged her students with learning difficulties to accept their different learning styles.  Inspired by the author’s own art teacher when she was in school.

A student wonders why her teacher has been teaching so for so long. Highlights all the wonderful things teachers do and why they do them.

Meow Meow! Books about Cats

Last week, we told you about some great books about dogs you can check out here in the Children’s Department.  You didn’t think we’d forget about you cat fans out there, did you?  Here’s some fabulous cat books:

The cat in the rhinestone suit goes on an adventure with his friends to settle a score with a snake named Del Moore, only to get in trouble and need some help out!

A cat gives advice to other animals, like a parrot whose owners don’t like how much he talks to a groundhog who feels insecure about predicting the weather!  Animals have problems, too, don’t they?

A sweet-natured cat tries to find the perfect spot to relax.

Eula is not round like other cats, in fact, she is square.  She doesn’t like being different until her friends help her realize how special she is.

A story about a cat who has all the qualities you look for in the perfect friend. (Did you notice we wrote "perfect friend" instead of writing "purrfect friend?")

1000 Books Before Kindergarten Program Update

1000 Books Before Kindergarten, Moore Memorial Public Library's early literacy program for children from birth until before they start Kindergarten, is going phenomenally. We've had lots of caregivers sign their child up, but we always want more to, so if you haven't yet, stop by the Children's Department and ask us to sign up.  It's a really quick and easy sign up and a great program to keep track of books you're reading to your child anyway.  Plus, there's little rewards along the way, like stickers and a book at the end!

Woof woof! Books about Dogs

Here are some awesome books about dogs we think you'll like:

Dog is left in charge of the cats while their owner goes away, but they cause lots of funny trouble for him!  Will the cats ever behave or will Dog get in trouble for not “cat-sitting” well?

George the dog is trusted by his owner to behave well when he is left home alone and he does, until he sees some yummy looking cake sitting out.  Will he give in to temptation or follow the rules?

A dog runs away in this story, only to miss home after leaving.  He gets help finding his way back from other dogs and cats.

Rocket the dog loves to read, but doesn’t know how to write. A friendly yellow bird encourages him to believe in himself and practice writing. Along the way, he gets inspiration on what to write about from the world around him.

This books teaches children how to count to ten by following along with a fun story about a dog who runs off with his owner’s shoe.
